The Myth of the Frame-less Frame

A common request we get in our shop is for a frame-less frame. Usually this means an inexpensive treatment wherein the art is “sandwiched” between two pieces of glass or plexiglass and somehow magically held in place on the wall. The problem is, that is isn’t any magic — that there just is not a good way to do accomplish this desire. “Clip” frames are a common type of idea people might look to for this kind of solution. While a popular item purchased at art supply shops, they are essentially a DIY option. These cheap framing options have serious limitations for most framing scenarios as well as being impractical solutions for most frame shops. One problem is the weight of the glass severely limits the size possible. Glass can be dangerous when not secured properly and these clip frames also limit the possibility of a proper hanging system.

Plexi-Box Framing

As a serious, high-quality frame shop, we are not blind to the idea of a minimal, clean, framing aesthetic. Our favorite option to achieve this end would be the use of a plexi-box frame treatment. The sleek, elegant design has a museum-like quality that provides a minimal framing effect for many different kinds of works of art, including 3-D objects!

Batik Printing Block — in Plexi-box Frame

There are many possible option available in plexi-box framing, including clear sidewalls, frosted, white, black or “smoky” sidewalls. Facing surfaces may be fabricated with either standard, uv-blocking or “museum” acrylic as well, while the substrate (or platform) can be fabricated with different materials, including a “full wrap” linen.
