Debunking the Mystique of Custom Framing

Unraveling the Mystique of Custom Framing

This information is provided in an attempt to dispel some of the misinformation regarding picture framing.

Fact #1: most artwork does not come in pre-made frame sizes.

The simple truth is that artists and designers do not typically prioritize the proportions of their art during their creation.

Reality: a high percentage of artwork created will be best presented in a custom-built frame.

Fact #2:  quality custom framing can be costly.

Our trained staff will work side by side with you, designing frame treatments based on aesthetics as well as the best conservation practices. The framing process itself is managed by skilled framers who navigate dozens of steps to craft the perfect finished frame job.

Reality: the time and dedication to creating a highly professional, finished product requires the appropriate compensation.

Fact #3:  discount custom framing, can be costly too.

The truth is that there are numerous discount framing services out there today. While the difference in pricing can be significant, one should be aware that the difference in quality is significant as well.

“Buy cheap, buy twice…”

Reality: quite often we are called upon to re-frame or repair a discount framer’s poor job. Cheap materials, shoddy workmanship and in some cases the permanent alteration of artwork have been issues brought to us for proper resolution.

While some more replaceable artwork may be appropriate choice by which to try to save a bit of money framing, we urge the owners of fine art and cherished keepsakes to strongly consider the option of quality custom framing.

Framing Large Artwork: Know What You’re Getting into!

Framing large artwork & prints can be a costly undertaking. No one likes to accept this, but it is a fact. We regularly consult with a lot of frustrated folks in our business who don’t understand: 1.) why they can’t find a (custom-sized[?]) ready-made frame for their large artwork, and 2.) why framing a large work of art is so expensive! First of all: really!?… you don’t understand the difference between asking a professional in their craft to custom-size something for you, as opposed to just buying something pre-made off a shelf? (maybe you’re thinking of customized blinds??). One simple answer to this admittedly frustrating dilemma is that good quality & materials + hours of labor = larger costs! The truth is, most folks would not be prepared to deal with the variable logistics of “DIY” framing a large frame. Small frames can be pretty straight-forward, and the systems ready-made purveyors provide the DIY framer are typically very user-friendly. Unfortunately, a reliable model of fabrication/ construction/ user-friendliness cannot be readily instituted into a large frame scenario. Consider this: just as most people do not typically make their own custom furniture for their homes, custom framing, as well, is best left to qualified professionals.

Mounting Press: Flatten your wavy, rippled or folded art!

PrintPress

Have art on paper that is rippled, wavy, folded or just won’t lay flat? Well, we can flatten your *art in our homemade mounting press! In order to get art flat, it needs to be “humidified” so that the paper will “relax” and flatten out. The next step is the careful, controlled drying of the dampened art between absorbent sheets of blotter board. It takes several days and several sets of fresh blotters to properly flatten the paper artwork.

(*Not all art can be flattened this way. We can only accommodate art under 24×36 at this time.)
